SOG FSAT-8 Flash II Tanto Straight Edge Knife Review

SOG FSAT-8 Flash II Tanto Straight Edge Knife Review: What Is It?

The SOG FSAT-8 Flash II Tanto Straight Edge Knife is a high performance straight edge knife made from 440C stainless steel. The blade is 4 inches long with a 3/16 inch thick cutting surface and weighs just over 2 ounces. The handle measures 5 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1/2 inch thick. The handle features a black G10 backspacer and a titanium frame lock mechanism. The blade is held open by two thumb studs at the tip of the handle. A small lanyard hole sits on the left side of the handle near the pocket clip.

The FSAT-8 is available in several colors including black, blue, green, gray and pink.

How Does It Compare To Other Straight Edges?

It’s hard to compare the FSAT-8 to other straight edges because it’s not really a traditional straight edge. However, there are some similarities between the FSAT-8 and other straight edged knives like the Spyderco Endura or Kershaw Tangler. Both of these knives have a very thin profile which makes them easy to hold in your hand while slicing through meat. They both feature a plain edge and they both have serrations along their length.

The Endura has an overall length of 8.25 inches, a 3.4 inch blade and weighs 2.5 ounces.

The Tangler has an overall length of 7 inches, a 2.9 inch blade and weighs 2.3 ounces. The FSAT-8 is lighter than either of these straight edges but it also has a smaller blade.

Is It Easy To Use?

The blade on the SOG FSAT-8 is very easy to use. It slices through meat and fruits and vegetables with ease. The blade’s flat design fits into your hand comfortably while you slide it across whatever food you’re preparing. The blade’s width is perfect for creating thin and even slices of most foods.

The blade does not suffer from any major flaws but it does have a minor annoyance. The tip of the knife is very acute which makes it slightly harder to use for certain types of cuts. You can’t really use the tip for heavy duty tasks like prying and the acute angle can make it a little awkward to cut through tough materials.

How Safe Is It?

The FSAT-8 is a safe knife. The handle features a locking mechanism that holds the blade in place when you’re using it. It also prevents the blade from closing on your fingers when you’re not using it.

The handle is large enough that it allows you to keep full control over the knife at all times. Even if the blade was to accidentally close while you were holding it, your fingers are far enough away from the edge that you wouldn’t suffer any injuries.

What Are The Major Benefits?

This knife is very strong. It can handle the rigors of daily kitchen use without showing signs of wear and tear. The blade stays sharp enough to easily cut through food and it won’t rust or chip even if you’re chopping through bones with it.

The knife is also easy to maintain. You can hand wash it or put it in the dishwasher without worrying about damaging the locking mechanism or the handle.

It’s also extremely affordable. You can purchase the knife directly from Amazon for less than $30. What Are The Drawbacks? The main drawback to this knife is the fact that it doesn’t have a perfect 5-star rating on Amazon.

While most people love this knife, a few don’t find it durable enough to justify the great price. It’s vital that you look at all of the reviews to get a sense of what this knife can really do.

It’s also a little bit on the heavier side so you might not want to carry it around in your pocket. There are plenty of other benefits to this knife so these drawbacks shouldn’t prevent you from seriously considering the SOG FSAT-8. Should You Buy It? Overall, the SOG FSAT-8 is a great knife for the price.

If you’re looking for a knife that will stay sharp and durable while you slice and dice through melons, pumpkins, carrots and even chickens, then this is a great choice.
