What Is A Torque Multiplier?

A torque multiplier is a device used to increase the torque applied to a screwdriver bit when turning it. There are two types of torque multipliers: linear and nonlinear. Linear multipliers work by increasing the amount of force applied to the screwdriver bit regardless of how hard or soft the tool is being used. Nonlinear multipliers work by changing the way forces are applied to the screwdriver bit.

Linear multipliers have been around since before computers were invented. They’re still used today in some industries such as aerospace where they allow a tool to operate at higher speeds without overheating.

Why Use A Torque Multiplier?

With a torque multiplier, however, you’ll need to apply much more force into the head of the screwdriver until it drives right through the nail.

This is most beneficial when driving screws into hardwoods like oak, teak, and ash. With a standard screwdriver, you’ll be able to drive the screw in only half way no matter how hard you try.

This is because these wood types have a strong grain structure that prevents the head of the screw from passing through. A torque multiplier can break through this grain and drive the screw all the way in.

How to Choose a Torque Multiplier

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a torque multiplier is the size of your screwdriver bits. Most linear multipliers are sized in 32nds, so they work with standard 1/4″ or 3/8″ bits.

If you want a multiplier that works with smaller 1/8″ bits, you’ll have to get a nonlinear multiplier. If your bits are larger than 3/8″ then you’ll have to get a nonlinear multiplier as well.

The second most important thing to consider is how rigid the tool is. If you’re using a linear multiplier, this equates to how thick the tool is.

The thicker the tool, the more force it can transmit. A general rule of thumb is that a multiplier should be at least as thick as the screwdriver bit you’re using with it.

The final thing to consider is how much effort it takes to turn the tool. Some people find that the more force required to turn a tool, the more satisfying it feels to use, while others find it exhausting.

What Else Can I Use a Torque Multiplier For?

If you have any old nuts and bolts that need to be removed, then a nonlinear multiplier can come in handy. Just replace the tip of your screwdriver with the multiplier and tighten it down on the bolt. Since the nonlinear multipliers increase torque exponentially, even the smallest movements will unscrew the bolt.

As for linear multipliers, they work best with larger bits and extended reach tools. For example, sometimes when you’re working on a lawnmower engine, the motor is located so far down inside that it’s impossible to access.

In this case, if you had a long-enough reach tool and a linear multiplier, you could get to the bolts from the top and unscrew them that way.
