Ryobi P517 Brushless Reciprocating Saw

Ryobi P517 Brushless Reciprocating Saw Review: Pros & Cons

Pros:

1) Good price point.

You get a good quality product at reasonable prices. (You might not like the fact that it’s made in China though).

2) Very light weight, which makes it easy to move around when working on small projects.

3) A very compact design, which means that it doesn’t take up much space in your tool box or bag.

4) Comes with a carrying case, which will make transporting the saw easier.

Cons:

1) Battery life is short.

The battery lasts only 2 hours before needing to be recharged. This isn’t enough time to do any heavy work such as cutting through wood or metal.

2) The blade does not have a sharp edge.

It’s more like a serrated edge. So if you’re going to use it for anything other than cutting wood, then you’ll need to sharpen it yourself every now and then. (I don’t recommend doing so though).

3) There are no instructions included with the saw, but there is one available online.

I’m sure they would’ve been helpful in learning how to use the saw properly too!

Should You Buy The Ryobi P517?

It’s a good idea to test out the product before buying it. So, if you have the chance, go to your nearest home Depot or Lowes and try it out! I’m sure you’ll like what you see. If not, there are always other brands to choose from such as Makita or Black and Decker. Just be sure to read many reviews about that brand before buying one!

When choosing the right type of saw for your job, you need to consider the purpose of your purchase. If you want to use it for more heavy duty work such as cutting through wood or metal, then I suggest getting a heavier duty model. Those types of materials require more energy to cut through and will quickly overheat a lower quality saw.

You also need to think about where you’ll be using the tool and how often. If it’s just for home use around the house, then the Ryobi P517 will probably do the job just fine. However if you’re a professional who uses a reciprocating saw on a daily basis, then I would invest in a higher quality model such as the DEWALT Model.

In case you’re wondering, I’m a professional myself. I use a reciprocating saw on a daily basis to make quick work of demolition jobs at various job sights. After trying out many different types and makes of saws, the DEWALT Model is by far my favorite because of its power and reliability.

I highly recommend it for anyone who is seriously considering a purchase of a reciprocating saw.

DEWALT Model: DEWALT Bare-Tool DC385B

There are two things you should look for when buying a reciprocating saw, the speed and stroke length. The speed determines how fast the blade can cut through a material while the stroke length refers to how far the blade can cut before you have to pull back. A longer stroke length allows for faster cutting.

A good all-around saw would be the DEWALT Bare-Tool DC385B. It’s not too expensive and offers plenty power to get through most jobs.

This saw can cut up to 20 inches per second and has a stroke length of 1-1/8 inches. It’s also 4.0 AMP motor is more than enough power to cut through just about anything!

If you want to cut through anything thicker than two inches, then I suggest using a different tool such as a hammer drill. Hammer drills are designed for drilling through masonry materials such as concrete, brick, and stone. The DC385B is a great choice for those jobs too.

The best part about this saw is that it is very lightweight at only 5.5 pounds. Being lightweight not only makes using the saw less tiring, but also increases your accuracy.

It has an easy to use trigger and a built in work light which illuminates dark areas. This allows you to see exactly where you’re cutting, which ultimately decreases the chance of an accident occurring.

This saw is a bare tool, which means it doesn’t come with a battery or a charger. It uses the DEWALT 20 Volt Max 4.0 AMP Hour Li-Ion Battery (DC9096).

This battery can be recharged up to 1,000 times before replacing! Although this saw is great for everyday use, it could stand to have a little more power for those tough jobs. These batteries and chargers can be bought separately though. You can also purchase a kit which includes the saw and two batteries along with a charger. The kit includes a heavy duty carrying case as well.

DEWALT KIT: DEWALT Bare-Tool DC385B3

If you’re looking for an even more powerful reciprocating saw that can cut through thicker materials, then I suggest the DEWALT Bare-Tool DCS331. This saw has a 4.0 AMP motor and can cut through materials up to 3/4 inches thick!

It’s also a little heavier than the DC385B at 7.0 pounds. This tool is also compatible with the same batteries and chargers as the DC385B.

Thank you for taking the time to read my reciprocating saw reviews! I hope this information helps you with your decision making process. All of these tools are great, so it just comes down to which one suits your preferences and needs.
