Ridgid Octane 18V Cordless Hammer Drill Review – R8611506

RIDGID Batteries are a brand name that manufactures Lithium Ion batteries for electric vehicles (EV). They have been around since 2009 and they make their own proprietary technology. Their first product was the RAV4 EV, which ran from 2010 to 2012. Since then they’ve released several other models including the RAV18, RAV10, and now the R8611506.

The R8611506 is a small-sized 18 volt cordless drill with a rechargeable lithium ion battery pack. Its main selling point is its ability to run for up to 10 hours on one charge, compared to the 3 hour or less of the previous model.

It’s not just about running longer though; it’s also about having better performance and longer life expectancy than other corded drills.

Features:

• Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Pack – Can run for up to 10 hours on one charge!

• Compact Size – Only 2.6″ x 4.3″ x 0.9″ / 68mm x 108mm x 222mm (W×H×D) when fully extended and weighs only 5 ounces (140 grams)!

• Easy To Use – Press the button 5 times within a second to start drilling!

• Long Lasting – 1,000+ Charges! (Batteries will lose capacity over time. Typically new batteries lose about 20% of their original capacity after 500 full charge and discharge cycles).

Pros:

R8611506 is very easy to use. Simply press the single button to start drilling. It’s also easy and intuitive to use its various functions.

The batteries included are also very good. They can run for about 10 hours straight before it dies, and even then it only takes 30 minutes to get back up to full charge.

The lifetime of the battery is also very long and it can last up to 1,000 charges before dropping to 80% of its original capacity.

It’s a very small and compact drill/driver that can easily fit in your pocket. It’s not a burden at all!

The drill is also very well balanced and easy to work with for a long period of time.

It’s very durable as I’ve had it for 2 years and there is no sign of slowing down!

The chuck also holds the bit in very well. I’ve had cheap drills in the past that would slip and the bit would suddenly disappear into the material you’re drilling. This never happened with this model.

Cons:

The only real problem with this product is that it doesn’t have the power of a larger corded drill. It’s great for small jobs around the house, but don’t try to use it to build an house! (You’ll want a larger and more powerful corded drill for that)

If you need to drill through some wood or metal thicker than 3 inches, then be prepared to wait as this drill will take several minutes to get through it.

The other problem is the price. This thing isn’t cheap and when it first came out it was priced at around $600 during the Christmas season. However, as with most electric devices, it has slowly been coming down in price to around $200-$300 depending on sales.

Verdict:

I love this drill! It works perfectly for my needs and can’t imagine using anything else now. The only problem I have is that since it’s so new, metric drill bits are hard to find.

I’m really glad I got this thing when I did!
