Ridgid Gen5X 5 Tool Kit Review

The Ridgid Gen5X is a high quality tool kit with a price tag of $199.99. This is a very good value considering its features and performance.

It comes with everything you need to perform your daily tasks at home or work. You will get a variety of tools like screwdriver, pliers, flat head screw driver, needle nose plier, tweezers and more. There are some great features such as the ability to use a drill bit up to 1/4″ diameter. The included tools come in handy when you have to do repairs or maintenance on your car or house.

There are many reviews online about this product. Some say it’s not the best but they’re all positive. The most common complaints are that there isn’t enough power and that it doesn’t come with a battery charger.

Other complain that the batteries don’t last long and they’ll eventually die out. That’s why you might want to consider buying another one if you already own one of these tools.

The kit comes with a heavy duty impact driver, flashlight, multi-tool plier, two screwdrivers, a set of hex bit socket adapters and a carrying case. This is a very complete set and you won’t need any other tools for basic home projects or automotive repairs or maintenance.

Some tips about using the tools:

Make sure to maintain them well so they will last longer.

Charge the batteries as soon as possible after they die. Leaving them dead for extended periods of time can make them weaker and they won’t last as long when you use them.

The carrying case that it comes with is meant to protect the tools when traveling but you might want to get a proper toolbox so you can keep the batteries and accessories near the tools.

You will need to buy a good quality battery charger and extra batteries if you want to use the tools more than a few minutes at a time.

These aren’t really tools for very heavy duty projects. They work best for small household projects and automotive repairs around the house or garage.

Keeping these things in mind you should get a lot of use out of this kit for many years to come.

:The Ridgid R9652 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 5-Tool Combo Kit with (2) 3.0 Ah Batteries, Rapid Optimum Charger, Tool Bag is a remarkable set of tools for the money. If you want a bare-minimum set of tools for very infrequent use, this may be worth looking into because it is so cheap.

For the price of this tool combo you could buy a few if you want to give them away to friends or family who are not very handy, but would like to think that they are. Otherwise it is probably wise to spend a little more money on a higher quality set of tools since it will save you money in the long-run. If you are looking to buy this as a gift for someone who is not very familiar with tools, you may want to look elsewhere because this set does not come with a battery charger and it is very likely that the person you are buying this for does not have any Ridgid batteries or accessories.

:The first thing to know about these is that they only use Ridgid’s proprietary batteries and there are no discount batteries that work just as well. These tools will run you about $70 each for the bare tool and there are a few different versions of each one. You can buy bare tools and then add a battery and charger later, but you will pay a much higher price for the privilege.

The bare tool prices are not too bad considering that they all include metal gears, a keyless blade clamp, dual-speed and the lithium-ion batteries hold a charge much longer than NiCad or NiMH batteries.

:These are pretty standard drills and they don’t really have any features that you can’t get on other brands for the same price. If you want a bare-tool cordless drill/driver then this is certainly cheaper than buying one from another brand, but you will have to buy a battery and charger separately. If you want a combo kit, there are better deals out there from other brands that include more tools and cost less overall.

:These are the bare tools so you will have to buy the batteries and charger separately. If you have a bunch of Ridgid accessories then it might be worth it to stick with that brand, otherwise there are better deals on other sets out there.

:This is really only a good deal if you do not currently own any power tools. If you already have a collection of lithium-ion batteries and chargers then it won’t save you any money to buy this.

:Basically you are paying $230 for the ability to own a Ridgid table saw. The site does not mention if it uses the standard “acme” style blade, but it looks like it might. If you need a circular saw, jigsaw or reciprocating saw then this is a good deal for you.

If you need a table saw and already have a good collection of other power tools that use the same battery and charger then this is a good deal for you. If you just need a jigsaw or reciprocating saw then it might be cheaper for you to buy the bare tool and save the rest for something else.

Deal History

It is what it is.

5/1/2012: They are currently offering a free 12V drill with any purchase of $99 or more. Just add the drill to your cart and then apply the coupon code below during checkout to get the discount. You can add multiple items to your cart since the code is good for $50 off a $100 order.

Coupon code: 445423

“Due to the overwhelming popularity of this Black Friday deal, the coupon code has expired. No further coupons can be applied.”

The coupon above is no longer valid, but you can still get a free 12V drill with a cart subtotal of $100 or more.

No expiration date given.

This is a pretty good deal for people that don’t have a lot of Ridgid accessories and want to start building up their arsenal a little at a time.

The free items are:

Bare-tool Circular Saw

Bare-tool Reciprocating Saw

Bare-tool Jigsaw

All three of these tools use the same battery and charger and are compatible with other 12V Max accessories. The bare-tool price of all three is $100 so you are basically getting them for free.

The combo kit comes with a free 12V Max flashlight that has a retail value of $30. You still have to buy a battery and charger which will run you about $50, so the total value is $80 for the kit. It includes a contractor bag, a car charger, an AC adapter and two 4.0Ah battery packs.

The combo kit does not include a drill or driver so you will have to buy one of those separately, unless you already own one from the kits that this replaces.

This is supposed to be a limited time offer, but there is no expiration date listed so it could end tomorrow or might not end until next year. The free items are offered with the combo kit and not sold separately.

This was pulled from their Black Friday ad that was supposed to be in store only, but it is also available online. You save $60 off the regular price so you might as well take advantage of it now. This is the first time they have offered any rebates so I would suggest taking advantage of this deal before they decide to never do it again.

No expiration date.

This is the 2013 version of this tool. It has all the same features except for the addition of the laser guide and hybrid battery compatibility. That is about it.

The bare tool price of this saw was dropped to $300, but it still isn’t a great deal considering the hybrid battery packs are twice the price of the regular 12V Max batteries.

The combo kit (pictured at the top) comes with two 4.0Ah battery packs and a charger at a price of $530. If you already own the drill from previous combo kits then this would be a good one to buy because it comes with more batteries and you get a free flashlight with it as well.

This is the new 2014 model. It has the same features as the rest of the 12V Max line except for an upgraded 4.0Ah battery.

It also has the same drawbacks which means you are better off buying the cheaper models or the cheaper bare tool version.

If you already own a 12V Max drill then I would recommend this kit because it comes with two of the 4.0Ah batteries and a charger which would run you $200 if bought separately. It’s not much of a bonus if you don’t own any other Ridgid battery powered tools, but it’s something.

The combo kit comes with a contractor bag, two 4.0Ah batteries, and a charger at a price of $530. You are still paying a lot for the brand name and there are aftermarket accessories that cost much less.

Another new tool for 2014 is this oscillating multi-tool. It isn’t anything spectacular as far as features go, but it is still an interesting piece of equipment to have in your arsenal.
