Guardian Safety Line: What Is It?
The life line or guardian safety line is a protective barrier between your guardian and the falling object. The life line protects the person from being injured if they are hit by the falling object. If there is no life line, then it means that the person could get hurt even if they do not get caught in the way of the falling object. There are two types of life lines: retractable and non-retractable. Retractable life lines have a spring mechanism which allows them to open up after some time. Non-retractable life lines cannot be opened up because they would break when dropped.
There are many reasons why a person might want to use a guardian safety line. Some of these reasons include:
To protect yourself from falling objects such as bricks, stones, trees etc.
To prevent injuries caused by flying debris.
For personal protection against thieves or other criminals. (You don’t want to be robbed)
How Does A Guardian Safety Line Work?
A guardian safety line consists of two parts: a body part and a support structure. The body part goes around the person and is connected to the support structure. The support structure could be anything that is strong enough to catch a falling object. Normally these structures are made up of thick wires twisted together to form a rope like structures. These support structures are then fastened to wooden posts or poles.
The person who is protected by the life line will usually wear a device which contains a reel mechanism. The reel is connected to the support structure at a long enough distance such that it can unravel freely.
The person being protected by the guardian safety line will wear this device around their waist. When the falling object lands on the life line, it fully extends and goes beyond the normal reach of the person. The falling object then gets caught by the support structure which creates tension on the line. The tension on the line prevents the falling object from hitting the person. This also prevents the person from getting injured. The support structure is really important because it absorbs all the force from the falling object so that the person wearing the life line remains safe.
Guardian Life Line Uses
The life line is mainly used for work at height. This is because falling objects can cause serious injury or death according to Workplace Health and Safety Regulations.
The life line is used to prevent deadly or dangerous falling objects from harming anyone. The life line is also used as a precaution to protect workers against falling objects which could cause injury.
The life line is also used by people who work on high buildings such as window cleaners, roof cleaners and painters. The life line is used as a precaution against any unexpected accidents such as the hose they use to reach great heights breaking or their equipment failing.
It is used as an extra measure of protection against falls and falling objects.
Life Lines And The Law
Every state has a different version of the law set in place to prevent people from being harmed by falling objects. For example in Victoria, the law states that if a person owns a property then they have a duty of care to make sure that people aren’t harmed by any falling objects or debris.
The law states that if any person is endangered by falling objects or debris then the owner of the property is guilty of an offense.
In New South Wales the work at height regulations are very strict. The law states that a risk assessment has to be carried out before any work commences.
This includes looking for any dangers such as loose bricks, cracked or uneven surfaces and even bird droppings. If there is a likelihood of falling objects then rigid measures must be taken to prevent injury. The regulations also state that a safety line must be used when working from heights over 3 meters.
A life line can also be known as a personal fall restraint system. It is the law to wear a life line when working from heights of over 3 meters in Victoria.
This law was put into place after a man fell to his death through a skylight while performing routine maintenance on the roof of a building.
Life lines are also known as personal fall restraint systems. The name explains exactly what it does which is to prevent personal falls.
When working from heights, it is important to wear a life line for your own safety. A life line can be used as a precaution against falling objects which could cause injury or death if not protected against.
Life Lines Are Used In Different Sectors
The life line is important in almost every industry. It is used in construction, manufacturing, roof cleaning, window cleaning, maintenance and building inspections.
It provides workers with a greater level of safety when working on heights.
The construction industry uses the life line on a regular basis. The life line is used as a precaution against objects which could fall on workers below.
This can be anything from tools to pieces of plaster or concrete. The life line is mainly used for construction work at height such as building roofs or skyscrapers.
Manufacturing companies which rely on workers using machinery to cut or drill materials such as metal also require safety measures to be put in place. This is because it is a common occurrence for objects such as nails and screws to fly at high speed in multiple directions.
It is important that these types of works are protected against these dangerous projectiles.
The life line is also used as protection again falling objects in building maintenance. Window cleaners and those who carry out inspections from heights need to wear a life line for extra safety.
It is common for objects such as bird droppings to fall from great heights which could potentially cause injury to someone below.
The law states that any person who owns a building or structure has a legal responsibility to make sure that no person is harmed by falling objects. An owner who fails to comply with the law can be found guilty of a criminal offense which can result in fines and imprisonment.
You Are Responsible For Your Own Safety
It is important for people to realize that they have a responsibility to look after their own safety. This is especially true in situations where there is a potential for falling objects.
It is not always possible to eliminate the risk completely but there are some simple safety measures which can be taken which can drastically reduce the chances of injury.
The life line is one of the best ways of protecting yourself against falling hazards. The life line is attached by a screw connection to an anchor point which is firmly secured to the building.
The other end is attached securely around the worker’s body. This means that if a falling object does hit them then they would be dragged away from the point of impact before they could be injured.
Types Of Life Lines
There are a few different types of life lines which are used in different situations for different heights. Most life lines are made from synthetic fibers such as nylon which are both light weight and strong.
The length of the line is also important and this depends on the height of the building or structure in question. The following sections explains some of the different types of life lines which are commonly used:
Short lines are used for heights under 20 feet (6 meters). They consist of a flexible fiber line which is 15 feet (4.5 meters) long.
One end is connected to an anchor point while the other has a connector which can be attached to the user’s harness. Once the line is connected to the user and their harness it is ready for use.
Long lines are used in situations where the height is between 20 and 75 feet (6 and 22 meters). The line is around 30 feet (9 meters) long and works in a similar way to the short line.
One end is attached to an anchor and the other goes around the worker’s body.
Safety nets are used in situations where the height is over 75 feet (22 meters). Two long lines with are attached at either end to anchor points at ground level.
The lines are joined by a series of ropes and a harness is tied at intervals along their lengths. One end of the harness is secured to an anchor at ground level while the other end is attached to the user. If a person was to fall through the safety net then they would simply be suspended underneath it.
Regardless of the type of life line which is used it is always important that it is inspected on a regular basis. The owner or supervisor should check it every week and ensure that all of the components are in good condition and that there are no signs of damage.
It is also vitally important that all employees wear their safety harnesses at all times while working from a height. This should be made clear to them during their initial training and should also be included in their employment contract.
If an accident does occur and a worker does fall through the line then it is important that emergency services are contacted immediately. The rescue should be planned carefully in advance so that the person is not moved until all of the proper safety measures have been taken.
Tip: If you ever need to rescue a person who has fallen through a safety line then the following equipment can be used:
– Having a coworker tied to a sturdy, flexible pole (e.g.
– Attaching the same pole to a harness worn by someone on the ground. They will then be able to fish the victim out
Both of these procedures should only be carried out by trained professionals.
