Milwaukee RedLithium Battery Pack: What Is It?

The Milwaukee Red Lithium Battery (MRLB) is a new type of rechargeable lithium ion battery manufactured by Milwaukee Metal Products Company (MMPC). MRLB batteries are designed to provide long life at low cost. They have been used in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, portable medical devices and other applications where high energy density is required. MRLB batteries have a capacity of up to 2000mAh, which is approximately five times greater than those found in most other rechargeables. The MRLB battery packs are made from nickel metal hydride (NiMH), a safer alternative to lead acid batteries.

Lead acid batteries are much heavier than other chemistries, have lower energy densities and have a shorter life, however they are still popular due to their low cost. On the other hand, lithium-ion and NiMH batteries have high energy densities but are much more expensive.

General battery characteristics such as voltage, capacity and chemistry cannot be used to compare different brands or types of batteries. For example, a 2.4V cell and a 1.5V cell may have the same voltage but could have significantly different capacities.

The only way to compare different battery technologies is to perform in-depth cycle life tests under normal operating conditions.
