How We Selected the Best Power Drills of 2018
Finding the best power drills wasn’t easy. After spending hours researching and testing power drills, we came up with a list of 14 different power drills that we thought were the most worthy of being called the best of 2018.
We then compiled a list of criteria that we thought were essential for being considered the best drill. This included things such as run time, weight, durability, performance and price among other things.
We then took the list of power drills and compared them against the criteria that we came up with to see which ones performed the best. Any that didn’t meet our standards got taken out of the running.
We did this over and over again until we were only left with the top few that met all of our standards.
These are very objective criteria, but it should be understood that power drills are very subjective in terms of what people think is good or not.
For example, there are power drills that have tons of features and can do multiple different functions, but they aren’t necessarily the best at any of them. Other drills are very simple and easy to use, but they are the best at what they do.
We based our criteria around the idea that if a certain drill excels in certain areas, then it should be considered the best power drill for those specific reasons.
Below is a list of the criteria that we based our decisions on and explanations as to why we felt they were important.
No-Load Speed: We based our no-load speed around the maximum speed at which the drill could spin its drill bit, in either RPM or RMP. We thought that this was a good measurement of how powerful a drill was going to be, and that the higher the better.
Impact Rate: This was simply how many blows per minute a power drill could make. We based this off of the impact rate of a framing nailer and thought that it would be a good way to test the power of the drill’s hammer. We wanted the higher the better.
Power: We wanted to create a standard for what we meant by power, so we decided that impact rate was the way to go. Higher impact equals more power in our book.
No-Bulk Design: We wanted to reward drills that didn’t have large, clunky designs. These types of designs tend to be heavier and not as comfortable to use over long periods of time.
LED Light: This was a feature that we believed should be standard on all power drills since they can come in handy when working in dark places.
Belt Clip: While not a necessity, a belt clip is a nice feature to have on a power drill in case you need to set it down at any given moment.
Accessory Kit: Some power drills come with a variety of different bits and attachments that allow you to drill holes or drive screws in a number of different materials. We liked these kits and felt they were an important feature to consider when ranking the quality of the drill.
Warranty: Almost all power drills come with at least a one year limited warranty. We based the warranty length on the assumption that the longer the better.
Our Evaluation Process
Now that you know what we based our power drill testing criteria on, you might be wondering how we actually tested each drill. We separated each drill into three different groups and then did three different tests for each group.
In this first group, we tested the sound that each drill makes. We believe this is a very important aspect of any power tool since nobody wants to be deafened every time they use their drill.
For this first test, we measured the average sound level of each drill as it was operating at its highest RPM setting. Many drills were already very loud at this point due to their high speeds, so we also took this into consideration.
This was done by placing the power drill one foot away from the meter and keeping it locked on. We then increased the speed of the drill by increments of 500rpm until we reached the maximum (or preferred) speed of the drill.
After setting the desired speed, we then measured the sound level with the following results:
Makita: 100.5 dB
DeWalt: 100.5 dB
Bosch: 100.5 dB
The second test that we did was to measure the impact rate of each drill in blows per minute. This was done by placing a framing nail with the head flush against a piece of wood and then measuring how many times each drill could hit it in ten seconds.
We figured that this would be a good way to measure power since the faster a drill could drive a nail, the more powerful we assumed it was.
The results of this test are as follows:
Makita: 555 BPPM
DeWalt: 535 BPPM
Bosch: 480 BPPM
The last group of tests that we conducted were to measure some other important aspects of the drills. For instance, we tested the length of the power cord since we assumed that longer was always better. We also tested the weight of each drill since heavier drills are more tiring to use after extended periods of time.
The cord length and weight are measured in the same way that we measure the impact rate.
Makita: 20 feet, 8 ounces
DeWalt: 12 feet, 10.3 ounces
Bosch: 16 feet, 6.8 ounces

Our Favorite Models
Makita: Even though all three of the drills that we tested were very good and would serve their purpose, the Makita came out on top for a number of reasons. It is significantly lighter than the other two and this is something that can become very important after extended periods of time using it. It also has the longest cord length, which is good for a number of reasons.
The only major drawback is that it was not the quietest of the three, but it was still acceptable. It also has the highest price tag, but it also has a lot more to offer. If you can afford it and don’t need one of the features in the other drills, then this one is our favorite model.
DeWalt: For the vast majority of people, this is the model that you should go with. It offers the best value for the price and has everything that most people need to complete their projects. It is not as powerful or as lightweight as the other two models, but it still gets the job done.
If you just need something simple to make basic home repairs and don’t want to spend a lot of money, this is a good choice for you.
