They are very popular among many professionals and home users alike. Their products have been used by millions of people around the globe. The company has been around since 1884 when it was founded by Charles Fosdick and William J. Murphy, both brothers from New York City respectively. They were both oil drillers.
They made their first product in 1896 called “Fosdick & Murphy’s Oil Drill”. After making several improvements they changed the name to “Murphy’s Oil Company” in 1900.
They then went into the gas industry with their own brand of gas jugs called “Gasoline Gas Jug Co.” in 1902. In 1904 they began producing a small number of tools which became known as the “Tool Works”. In 1906 they added a new line of tools including screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches and other hand tools. They continued to expand their line of tools until 1911 when they stopped production altogether due to high costs.
In 1915 the company was purchased by the American Standard Corporation (ASCO) which had a larger manufacturing capacity than Murphy’s Oil Company so they continued to produce the Tools under ASCO name. The Tools were sold through Sears Roebuck & Co.

As the years went on, the line continued to grow and by the 1960s the company was producing a wide range of hand tools for automotive, construction, electronics and hardware uses.
In 1990, the company started manufacturing hand tools that were 100% made in the U.S.A.
