Irwin Marples Bevel Edge Woodworking Chisels Review
The Irwin Marples company was founded in 1885 and they are known for their high quality hand tools. They have been making woodworking tools since the early 1900’s. Their products include: Hand Planes, Pocket Plane, Square Nose Plow Plane, Miter Saw, Router Table Saw, Drill Press and many other types of hand tools. They specialize in creating very well made tool handles with great attention to detail.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Irwin Marples because I used to work at one of their factories when I was younger. My first job there involved building the lathes which were used to make some of my father’s furniture. One day I came home from work and found out that my dad had died in a car accident. At the time, it didn’t really hit me how much this would affect my future plans but now looking back, it makes sense.
My dad was a hard worker and he loved what he did. He taught me to appreciate hard work and never took any shortcuts in his craft. While I don’t think I’ll ever reach the level of skill or knowledge my father had, I do remember him telling me that if anything happened to him, then he wanted me to go into business for myself so that I could continue his legacy. I’m still not sure what that means for me but I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually.
Either way, thanks for the advice dad…
Irwin Marples Bevel-Edge Chisel Overview
Irwin Marples chisels are some of the best in the world and don’t cost an arm and a leg either. They can be found most anywhere woodworking tools are sold. They have a good reputation for lasting a long time even with heavy use. While some woodworkers feel they are a little over priced, most people consider them to be a good value.
Irwin Marples Bevel-Edge Chisels come in 2 different blade widths: 1/4″ and 3/8″. The 1/4″ blade is for heavier chopping and dado cuts. The 3/8″ blade is better suited for fine woodworking and toothing. They come in 8 different sizes ranging from 1/4″ to 1″.
The smaller sizes are great for detail work while the larger sizes make quick work of any job.
The bevel edge design eliminates the need to constantly re-sharpen the blade. The blades have a tendency to become dull faster than traditional chisels but this can be greatly reduced by using a diamond stone.
They are made of high carbon steel and come with a tough plastic handle that is easy to grip even with wet hands.
Irwin Marples M373 Chisel Overview
