How to Use and Install Drywall Anchors: Tips from the Pros
The first thing you need to do when installing a wall anchor is to make sure that there are no gaps between your floor and ceiling. If there are any gaps, then it will not be possible for the anchor to hold up the wall. You have two options here; either you can use a screwdriver or a nail gun. Both methods work fine, but if you want to save time, then using a screwdriver would be better.
First of all, take off the old screws and nails that were used before. Then go ahead and put them back into their original holes so they don’t get lost during installation. Now just pull out the existing screws and replace them with new ones.
If you’re going to use a nail gun, then you’ll need to remove the old nails and put in new ones. Make sure that the size of the nails is correct. A good rule of thumb is that the smaller the diameter, the easier it will be to insert them into each hole. For example, if you’re using small nails (1/8 inch), then it’s going to be much easier than inserting 1/4 inch nails (3/16 inch).
You’ll need to start with the top part of the wall first, and then move on to the bottom part. It really helps to have someone help you hold up the wall while you put in the screws or nails. Don’t forget to use a level so that the screws are straight.
If you don’t have a nail gun, then you can use a screwdriver instead. However, using a power tool is generally much faster. You will need to put a screw into each hole and then turn it with a screwdriver. Make sure that you don’t over tighten the screws because wood can only withstand a certain amount of force before it cracks or breaks.
You can also use a cordless drill instead. This is an even faster method, but you do have to be very careful when using one. Using too much force can cause the bit or chuck to break off inside the wood. If this happens, you can try to remove it, but it might be easier to just buy a new drill.
When you are finished installing all the new screws and nails, then you just need to put your curtain rods back on the wall. Now your old holes will be supported and they won’t rip apart the rest of the wall.
How to Use Drywall Anchors
When you are putting up drywall, you will sometimes need to use special wall anchors as well. You can’t just put screws into the drywall like you would wood because wood has a lot of give to it. However, drywall is made out of a very brittle material that can easily break if too much pressure is placed on it. That’s why you need specialized wall anchors so you don’t break the drywall.
What you need to do is put a hole in the drywall and then put the wall anchor through it. The wall anchor will spread out behind the drywall keeping it from breaking or cracking when you put the screw in. Once you have installed the screw, then you can put whatever you need on it such as a picture hook or curtain rod bracket.
The two most common types of wall anchors are the toggle bolt and the drive sleeve. The toggle bolt looks like a large screw and has wings on the side. As you turn it with a screwdriver, the wings will open up and grip the wallboard. The drive sleeve is a short cylinder that has teeth around the outside. As you turn the sleeve with a drill or screwdriver, the teeth will grip behind the wallboard.
These are the two most common types of wall anchors. You can find them at any hardware store and they aren’t too expensive. They come in different sizes so it’s best if you measure the thickness of your drywall before you go to the store.
It doesn’t matter what type you buy; they all work about the same. The toggle bolt tends to be stronger and can hold more weight, but that isn’t always the case. It all depends on the type of wall anchors you buy. Make sure you use the right size wall anchors for the job or else you could end up having problems with your project.
The important thing to remember is that you need to use wall anchors at all times when installing curtain rods or other items on your walls. If you just put screws directly into the drywall, then it is going to break off over time because there are only so many screws you can install into the wall before it weakens it.
By using wall anchors, you can install as many screws as you want and you don’t have to worry about the wall breaking. This is especially true if you have kids or pets that are going to be pulling on the wall. The last thing you need is for the wall to fall down because it wasn’t installed properly in the first place.
Besides supporting your walls, wall anchors can be used for coat hooks or towel racks as well. Most of the time, these types of fixtures require screws into the wall behind them. By using wall anchors, you can be sure that they are going into a solid piece of wood instead of a flimsy drywall.
In order to get the most out of your drywall anchors, you should consider getting a drill bit set that includes a countersink. This way, you can put the proper sized hole in the drywall and then put the right sized screw into it. If you don’t use a countersink, then you could end up with a jagged edge on your screw. This would be very easy for someone to get their hand caught on and it wouldn’t look very good at all.
As you can see, drywall anchors aren’t really that expensive and they are well worth the money. They can give you peace of mind because you know that what you are installing is going to stay in place no matter what.
Everyone should have a few boxes of wall anchors in their home because you never know when you are going to need them. If you start using them for everything, then you will be surprised at how much they can do to improve your life at home.
