What Is An Oscillating Tool?

An oscillating tool is a device used to create sound when a current passes through it. There are many types of oscillators, but they all work similarly: They generate a periodic signal with varying amplitude and frequency. When the current changes, so does the signal. Analog Oscillators

Analog oscillators are a type of simple oscillator that uses a circuit to convert an external signal into an alternating current. One example of this type of device is a theremin. Theremins are electronic instruments that are played without touching them (they are named after their Russian inventor, Leon Theremin).

To play a theremin, a person moves his or her hands toward and away from two antennas. As the hands get closer to the antennas, the frequency of the signal generated by the antennas increases. As the hands get farther away, the frequency decreases. By moving the hands up and down in relation to the antennas, a person can produce a melody.

Digital Oscillators

Digital oscillators are a type of simple oscillator that uses transistors and other digital logic devices to convert binary code into a series of ones and zeros that approximate a desired frequency. For example, some digital watches use a digital oscillator to keep track of time. Some calculators also use this type of oscillator.
