DeWALT TOUGH SYSTEM MUSIC PLAYER REVIEW
The DeWALT Tough System Music Player (TSM) is a compact audio/video receiver with built-in Bluetooth technology. The TSM was released in 2015 and is manufactured by DeWalt Electronics Inc., based in Fort Worth, Texas.
As far as features are concerned, the TSM offers various functions such as; Internet Radio, USB port for media storage, MP3 playback and other functions. However, it lacks some key features like Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS functionality and other functions.
In addition to its low price tag, the TSM is one of the most affordable receivers available in the market today. It is currently priced at $99.95 from Amazon US or Amazon UK. The TSM is also available through Best Buy’s website for $79.99 (US).
You can buy it directly from DeWalt Electronics Inc. via their online store.
For those who want to learn more about the TSM, here is what we have learned so far:
The DeWALT Tough System Music Player (TSM) is compatible with iOS devices and Android smartphones. It supports A2DP/AVRCP 2.1+EDR, AAC+, FLAC, M4A, OGG Vorbis & WMA music files. The TSM comes with a built-in rechargeable battery.
The battery can last up to 15 hours on a full charge under normal usage.
The TSM is an all-in-one compact music player and receiver. It measures 4.4″ (113mm) wide, 2.5″ (64mm) deep and 1.2″ (30.5mm) high.
The front panel of the TSM is comprised of a 6.2″ (158mm) full-color LCD screen, which displays information such as clock, volume, menu and various system settings. The TSM comes with a detachable stand that can be positioned at the left or right side of the unit. The stand can be used to set the unit on a flat surface for vertical orientation.
The main advantage of using the stand is to place the TSM on a table or other flat surface. This way, the TSM functions like an all-in-one compact high fidelity music system.
One of the main selling points of this receiver is its built-in internal battery that allows you to take it outdoors without relying on an AC outlet.
The TSM comes with two full-range 3″ (76mm) speakers and a 10″ (254mm) subwoofer. It also has a bass reflex port on the rear panel for better low-frequency response.
The speaker terminals are color coded (red/positive and black/negative). Make sure you connect the wires correctly or you might damage the amplifier.
The left side of the unit features:
A 3.5mm aux input for external audio devices such as CD/DVD players, gaming consoles, MP3 players, microphones and other audio sources. This port accepts stereo unbalanced audio input.
A micro USB port for firmware updates only.
A 3.5mm headphone jack. The speaker will be automatically disabled when you plug in a set of headphones into the TSM.
The right side of the unit features:
A power button. Press once to turn on the receiver. Hold for a few seconds to turn off the unit.
An SD card slot. This slot is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards. The unit can read MP3, M4A, FLAC and OGG files stored on these cards. It supports all bit rates and sample rates.
You can use the TSM to play music stored on your computer or any other USB device (flash drives, external hard drives, etc.) connected to its USB port. However, DeWalt warns that you should not attempt to connect a device through a USB hub. Make sure to connect the device directly to one of the TSM’s USB ports.
The rear panel features:
A 120V AC power input for the included AC adapter. This port is protected by a fuse.
A 3.5mm aux output for connecting an additional audio source to the unit. The sound of this output can be mixed with or played in sync with the music coming from the TSM’s main speakers.
A 3.5mm headphone output for private listening. This port also doubles as an auxiliary output for connecting to the TSM’s auxiliary input. Thanks to commenter Bipin for pointing this out!
A 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting another audio source to the unit. The sound of this input can be mixed with or played in sync with the music coming from the TSM’s main speakers.
An RCA composite video output that allows you to connect the TSM to an RCA-based TV or display. This port duplicates what is shown on the LCD display of the TSM.
A 3.5mm mic input for connecting an external mic to the unit.
The right side of the LCD display features three buttons:
A Loudness button that boosts low and high frequencies to give vocals more clarity and instrumentation a more “full” sound.
A Scan button that lets you browse through all the available presets (AM, FM, USB, Aux1, Aux2 and CD).
A Tune button that lets you manually adjust frequency for the AM and FM bands.
The left side of the display shows you:
The current preset and input source.
The volume level.
The approximate amount of battery life remaining. If the LCD indicator starts to blink then it’s time to change the 9V battery.
The receiver runs on 6 C cell batteries or an included AC adapter (not shown in photos). However, I recommend using the rechargeable 9V battery pack if you’re going to use this outside the house.
Performance and Usage
The DeWalt DCR015 Bluetooth speaker lets you enjoy your music out in the yard while keeping your phone or media player safely inside. It’s weather resistant so a little rain isn’t going to stop you from listening to your tunes. The unit has both a 3.5mm aux input and a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can connect nearly any audio source to it.
The TSM’s speakers put out more than enough sound to fill my backyard and the sound quality is quite good. The unit has rich, full mids and highs with plenty of bass. The sound is especially crisp when you turn up the Loudness setting. I find that setting it to about 3/4 of the way works well, but everyone’s taste in sound quality is different.
One really nice feature of the TSM is that it remembers the last eight devices you connected to it. So after I power on the TSM I can choose to listen to music from my phone, my son’s Nintendo DS, or our old iPod touch, all without having to re-pair them with the TSM.
You also have a lot of control over the sound of the speaker with its built-in equalizer. You can choose from a wide range of presets to get the sound exactly how you like or you can choose to manually adjust the lows, mids and highs to your liking.
The TSM100 is also a great tool for outdoor parties. Whether you’re grilling in the back yard, having a drink by the pool or hanging out at the campground, you’ll have music playing from your phone in no time. If you have multiple people playing music you can connect up to 8 phones or media players to the unit.
The DeWalt TSM100 works really well for its intended purpose, as both a powerful speaker and an easy way to play your music in different areas of the house. The price of $129.00 USD is a bit steep but for anyone that’s already in the market for a speaker of this size and quality, it’s really not all that bad.
The speaker is covered by a 1-year warranty which covers parts and labor should your unit need repair. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of sending it in for repair then you can always buy a new one for about $90 on Amazon.
Connects wirelessly to Bluetooth devices.
Plenty loud enough to be used outdoors even over the sounds of friends and family.
Has a built-in rechargeable battery that lets you take it outside without having to find an outlet.
Holds a charge for a very long time (I’ve only charged it once since I got it three months ago).
Multiple input options (Bluetooth, 3.5mm Auxiliary input, 3.5mm Headphone input).
Speakerphone option only available when paired to a phone.

8.5 Out of 10
The DeWalt TSM100 is a very nice speaker for the money and has a lot of great features that are sure to make anyone happy. The only downsides are the price is a bit high and the speakerphone mode isn’t great.
If you can look past those two things then you’ll really enjoy this product. I certainly do!
NOTE: This review is based on the version I reviewed which is the 15W version. There is also a 20W version available. The higher priced model supports the use of two speakers wirelessly for a true stereo experience. I haven’t personally tried the 20W version but I would imagine it to be a much better choice if you have the money and need the extra volume.
