Bosch PB10-CD Powerbox Review by PC World

The PB10-CD is a powerful all-in-one home theater PC with built in Blu-ray drive, DVD burner, USB 2.0 hub, Ethernet port and audio/video out (AV Out). It’s the perfect PC for streaming TV or playing your favorite games in full 1080p with it’s dedicated GeForce graphics card.

At less than 4 inches high and less than a foot wide, the PB10-CD is small enough to fit in your living room behind your TV. Despite its small size, the PB10-CD is still a full PC capable of running any OS including Windows 8.1 (provided on USB drive) or Linux. With 4 USB 2.0 ports you can easily connect a keyboard, mouse or any other device.

The built in RJ-45 port allows you to directly connect to your router for an Ethernet connection and the built in Wifi module allows you to connect to your network wirelessly. A HDMI port and DVI port allow you to output video to your TV, while the 3.5mm audio jack and optical out allow you to feed sound to your stereo or surround sound system.

The PB10-CD is a fully functional Windows 8.1 PC, allowing you to browse the web, watch TV, use multimedia and play games. Our recommendation is to purchase or download a media player such as XBMC or Kodi, which allow you to play a wide array of video files including 1080p content with low system resource usage. It’s also perfect for the casual gamer, as it can easily handle games such as Sim City or the Sims, StarCraft or Diablo 3 with most graphics settings turned up.

With the included 16GB of RAM and powerful quad-core processor, even games like Battlefield 4 or Far Cry 4 are playable on mid-range settings.

The PB10-CD can connect to your TV or projector via it’s HDMI 1.4a port and it’s also able to decode most popular audio formats such as MP3, FLAC or OGG Vorbis. The PB10-CD features a single 3.5mm stereo output jack and a optical S/PDIF output for direct audio connections to your AV receiver or amplifier.

We’ve also included a USB drive with software that allows you to play and convert most popular video formats and subtitle files.

The PB10-CD is designed to be used straight out of the box. The on/off and reset buttons are located on the front for easy access. The internal hard drive is partitioned and optimized for use with Windows 8.1, your operating system is also stored within a hidden section of the hard drive to protect your privacy.

Bosch PB10-CD Media Experience

The main selling point to the PB10-CD is it’s ability to run Kodi (previously known as XBMC), a free and open-source media player that is perfect for HTPC (Home Theater PC) use. Packed with features, there are add-ons that allow you to stream live TV, download and play online content, as well as take your gaming to the next level. The PB10-CD is also capable of running most OS such as Windows 8.1 which is provided on a USB drive.

A great feature about running an alternative Operating System is that you’re able to bypass any content restrictions imposed by the manufacturer.

Bosch PB10-CD Interface

Designed to be used with a TV, the PB10-CD has an easy to use and simple user interface which allows you to quickly browse and access your content. With the included remote, you can easily navigate the interface using the arrow keys and select button. The interface itself resembles that of most popular media players such as Microsoft’s Media Center. It consists of 5 sections: Program Guide, Movies, TV Shows, Music and Pictures.

The Program Guide, as the name suggests, includes a weekly program guide for your selected time zone. The interface is fairly simple and gives you the ability to filter what is shown using the right-hand side bar. For example, you can choose to display all programs, or just those that are movies. You can also display the program guide for either today or tomorrow.

The Movies section displays a list of all the movies that you have on your PC. It displays the movie poster, the release year and user rating, along with the ability to filter by these parameters as well as by actor and genre.

The TV Shows section works in a similar way, displaying a list of all your TV shows. It displays the show’s logo, the release year and a brief description. It also allows you to filter by these parameters as well as by actor.
