This means it has a shorter life span.

In order to prevent the battery from getting damaged, the charger has an inbuilt protection mechanism. If the battery is hot due to overcharging then the charging current gets reduced automatically. Also, another protection mechanism is that if the battery is not charged to its full capacity within a stipulated time (usually 24 hours), then the charger stops charging.

This feature helps to increase the life of the battery.

If you want to increase the life span of your power tools (chances of battery failure decreases as you keep using the product), then always use a battery that is fully charged. Also, don’t leave the battery on the charger for more than 24 hours as it may lead to battery damage.

Dimension wise, both types of batteries are similar in size and weight. However, a lithium-ion battery is safer to use around water.
